Film Summary
This is a comedy about two mismatched detectives: Dirk Diamond, "Private Dick," a Miami
Vice wannabe who's more of an Ace Ventura reject, and Sphinx Brown, "International Spy and
Assassin," a cross between Heather Locklear, Pam Grier and Dark Angel.
They become a "Moonlighting" style duo, hurling insults at each other like artillery, and
take on the case of a trance channeler named Gemini Quasar, who disappeared while trying to
contact the other side. The supporting cast is rounded out by the trance channeling group, a
motley crew of eccentrics from all walks of life, now presided over by Harmony Sunshine, the
New Age hippie apprentice forced to become their new guru.
This group consists of a married, middle-aged couple from New York - Tony, a Joey
Buttafuoco-esque man whose every other word is "fuck," and Vicki, his nagging wife with teased
hair - who do nothing but argue; Kendra, a bleached-blonde Valley girl; Chante, her
African-American counterpart; Orangello Jenkins, a Puerto Rican girl from the streets; Surf Dog
B, a surfer/stoner dude; Lucy, an Asian Rastafarian with dreadlocks; Habib, an East Indian man
with a turban, who is very perplexed by American customs; and Spencer, a cross-dressing, portly
gentleman.
When Sphinx first blows into town, it is to avenge the death of Dirk's ex-partner, "the
man she once loved in the summer of '88." She promptly becomes the brains and the brawn of
the agency, delegating Dirk to doing what he does best - primping and preening. At first, Sphinx
attempts to solve crimes, while Dirk attempts to look cool and hit on the unattainable Sphinx.
She promptly handles his overtures by knocking him around and beating him down.
Dirk's overly friendly pit bull, Bubblehead, decides that Sphinx will be her new best
friend, much to Sphinx's consternation. Once they are hired by Harmony Sunshine, they
infiltrate the group undercover. Sphinx becomes known as the "Exorcist to the Stars." Dirk is
relegated to posing as a sex offender seeking spiritual enlightenment. And Bubblehead
accompanies them wherever they go, which Sphinx does not care for.
Sphinx becomes very impatient with the novice Harmony's attempts to align her chokras,
so she summons the spirits herself by way of a ouija board. A demon threatens them all, but
Sphinx is unfazed. Immortality does not unsettle Sphinx Brown. She has handled worse and is
determined to kick the demon's booty and avenge the death of the man she once loved in the
summer of '88, while she's at it. By this time, she has also learned of Bubblehead's checkered
past and vows to track down her abusive former master and make him pay, too.
The girls from the group go out shopping and bond by smoking a blunt together. The
guys get accosted by a randy demon. And everybody ends up at a Halloween masquerade ball at
a downtown club, which is run by a Mafioso-type figure rumored to be involved in Santeria.
While Sphinx checks out the scene backstage, Dirk (dressed as Elvis) and Harmony
(dressed as an angel) somehow end up on stage and become a big hit as spontaneous gangsta
rappers/R&B singers.
While they bask in the limelight, Sphinx is attacked by a henchman, and Bubblehead
saves her life. At this point, Sphinx and Bubblehead become inseparable. After Dirk and
Harmony's performance, they are greeted by Diva D and her agent, Diana Dish, who offer to
make them into multimedia superstars.
They promptly abandon the case, in pursuit of fame and fortune, leaving Sphinx to
handle it all on her own. But, before the night is through, a brawl ensues, and Sphinx must bail
everybody out of jail.
At the next masquerade ball, Sphinx gets a taste of the limelight herself, running on stage
while escaping another henchman. Launching into song, she, too, becomes a hit and almost
forgets why she's there. When it is revealed that one of the group has made a secret pact with
the devil, Sphinx drags Dirk to New Orleans to make final contact with the other side.
Opening a portal to Hell, Sphinx must go into the Underworld to wage war on evil. Dirk
accidentally falls through the portal while looking at himself in the mirror. Lucy and Surf Dog B
go in after them, bringing Diana Dish as a sacrifice, who is promptly swooped away by demons.
By the time Lucy and Surf Dog B find Sphinx, they have smoked a lot of marijuana, and
Sphinx has managed to kill several demons single-handedly, while solving the murder of the man
she once loved in the summer of '88. Locating the missing trance channeler, Gemini Quasar,
they all escape from the Underworld, thanks to Sphinx.
Because of Lucy and Surf Dog B's penchant for smoking too much weed, they had
forgotten to tell Sphinx that Dirk fell into Hell, and she must return through the portal one more
time, with some holy water and Bubblehead in tow. Fed up with those pesky demons, she
doesn't hesitate to incapacitate any creature that comes her way, including Bubblehead's abusive
ex-master.
When Sphinx finds Dirk, he is living it up with a bevy of beautiful babes. Sphinx turns to
leave him, but the babes become demons who hold Dirk captive. Begging for her mercy, she
finally agrees to help him, after negotiating full control of the agency, amongst other things.
When he is almost sucked into the depths, it is a kiss by Sphinx that inexplicably saves his life.
She also rescues Diana Dish on the way out, per the condition that she represent her.
Before leaving Hell, Sphinx manages to take out the devil himself, reminding him who
he's messing with - Sphinx Brown, "International Spy, Assassin, Exorcist, and Diva."
